Puel demoted Govou, but still included him in the side which beat St Etienne 1-0. That victory was marred by a public clash between Puel and Jeremy Toulalan who had to be restrained by Govou as he confronted the manager.

"Our result in the game at Anfield makes it more complicated for us in the sense that Liverpool have to come here and win," said Govou. "But we hope to qualify for the next round as early as possible so that we can manage our schedule more easily before the winter break."
