Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Co challenged by Newcastle hero Loic Remy

The likes of Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero – along with Arsenal trio Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil – are being challenged in the race for the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month title by an unlikely source.

Loic Remy has stepped up to the plate in impressive style this month as Newcastle seem to have put some of their early season travails behind them, winning three out of three in November whilst putting two of the so-called ‘big guns’ to the sword in the process.

Chelsea and Spurs, as well as Norwich, have felt the full French force of a revitalised Newcastle side – led by the man they like to call Alain DePardew – whose return to winning ways has been due in no small part to on-loan star Remy.

The man Pardew lured from QPR, for one season at least, was on target in each of those three successive wins and Remy has since gone on record as saying that a Champions League place is not out of the question. His manager remains non-committal on that subject.

But one profound and bullish statement the Newcastle manager is prepared to make is that the man who is keeping the goals out, not scoring them, is one of the best in the business. Keepers normally make the headlines for the wrong reasons; not Tim Krul.

According to those men in anoraks we all rely on, the 25-year-old Dutch international made no fewer than 14 saves in the 1-0 win against Spurs – more than any keeper in a top flight game this season – prompting Pardew to say: “I think he is the best Dutch goalkeeper and one of the best in the league."

It’s about time those trusty custodians got a mention when it comes to personal awards but, having said that, there is no ignoring those crowd-pleasers who make things happen at the other end of the field. Those who make the art of goalscoring look like a walk in the park.

Stand up Luis Suarez and Liverpool strike partner Daniel Sturridge, both of whom have nine goals to their credit, and the Premier League’s current leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero who struck twice in last weekend’s 6-0 demolition of Spurs to take his league tally for the season to ten.

That impressive trio of Arsenal stars –Wilshere, Ramsey and Ozil – are also in the mix as far as our fans’ player of the month awards go, and as we mentioned earlier don’t rule out the evergreen Ryan Giggs. But you might have other ideas about who should be the latest recipient of our prestigious award.
