Luis Suarez: Patrice Evra claims not racist in South America

14 November 2011 11:48
Luis Suarez believes he should not face a charge of racially abusing Patrice Evra because what he said to the Manchester United defender is not offensive back home in Uruguay.

The Liverpool midfielder has been the subject of a month-long investigation by the Football Association into allegations made by Evra following the 1-1 draw at Anfield last month.

But the FA are no nearer to concluding whether Suarez is guilty of racism or not as some of the words the player is said to have used are open to interpretation in different countries.

The case is understood to hinge on the use of one particular word which Suarez is alleged to have used which is regarded as an accepted cultural term in South America.

However when it used in this country it may be deemed as offensive. Both players have been interviewed by the FA's disciplinary unit and witnesses have also spoken to investigators.

The FA requested that neither player spoke about the case but Suarez, while on international duty with Uruguay last week where he scored four times in a 4-0 win over Chile, said: 'There is no evidence I said anything racist to him (Evra). I said nothing of the sort.

'There were two parts of the discussion, one in Spanish, one in English. I did not insult him.

'I called him something his team-mates at Manchester call him, and even they were surprised by his reaction.'
