May 28 2005 Benitez pulls off the miracle of Istanbul to land Liverpool their fifth European Cup despite trailing AC Milan 3-0 at half-time. His players suggest a calm, rational team-talk from the Spaniard convinced them all was not lost. May 13 2006 Liverpool come back from 2-0 and 3-2 down to beat West Ham on penalties and lift the FA Cup. Steven Gerrard's injury-time thunderbolt takes the game to spot kicks, with Pepe Reina saving from Paul Konchesky, Anton Ferdinand and Bobby Zamora. May 1 2007 Daniel Agger's early goal levels the Champions League semi-final at 1-1 on aggregate with Chelsea, giving Pepe Reina yet another chance to shine on penalties. Geremi and Arjen Robben are denied as Liverpool reach a second final in three years. July 4 2007 Just over a month after insisting he needed to be backed in the transfer market by Liverpool's owners, Benitez completed the £20 million signing of the Atletico Madrid captain Fernando Torres. The Spanish international has since made Liverpool's record fee look something of a bargain. March 14 2009 Four days after humbling Real Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League, Liverpool come from a goal down to record their biggest win at Old Trafford since 1936. Goals from Fernando Torres, Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena secure a 4-1 win to blow the title race open.
