Liverpool's Fabio Aurelio faces sixmonth layoff after holiday injury

The 29-year-old left-back suffered a twisted knee while playing football with his children on holiday and was thought to be need to require surgery. Benitez, however, speaking at the unveiling of Liverpool's £17m signing Glen Johnson, said: "One, maybe two months, I expect him back by then. Certainly not six." That timespan would make Aurelio a doubt for the start of the new Premier League season but the club and fans will be relieved it is not longer. The injury appeared to mean manager Rafa Benitez would pull the plug on Andrea Dossena's potential move to Juventus, but that is not no longer necessarily the case. Dossena, 27, has failed to make an impact since his £7 million move from Udinese and it was widely expected that he would return to Italy this summer, with Turin his most likely destination. That now looks remote, although even without Aurelio's injury, Dossena is still set to be behind Argentine Emiliano Insua in the pecking order, while Benitez has brought in Chris Mavinga from PSG as further back-up. Meanwhile, former Liverpool and Everton defender Gary Ablett has become a manager for the first time after being appointed successor to Jim Gannon at League One side Stockport County. Stockport are in the process of being taken over by a consortium headed by ex-Manchester City player Jim Melrose. "Gary has a fantastic pedigree, having enjoyed a career at the very highest level," Melrose said. "He has a big reputation for the quality of his coaching at Liverpool and Everton over the last few years. "This appointment should underline our ambition and I'm sure it will be welcomed by the players."
