Liverpool v Manchester Utd: Time for us all to stand together

The image of two young fans – one wearing the red of Liverpool; the other the blue of Everton – standing side by side with the numbers 9 and 6 on their backs will live long in the memory.

An emotional tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster before Monday night’s Premier League clash between Everton and Newcastle was a commendable show of respect.

Let’s hope for a similar scenario on Sunday when Liverpool play host to their most bitter of rivals....Manchester United.

Fans of the two clubs, in the past, have often bated each other with cruel and crude references to Munich and Hillsborough.

Appeals have been made to both sets of supporters, from players and managers alike, to behave with dignity, respect and decorum.

Liverpool have revealed plans for rival skippers Steven Gerrard and Nemanja Vidic to release 96 red balloons before United’s clash at Anfield.

Sir Alex Ferguson set the perfect tone ahead of a usually heated battle when he commented ‘we are completely in support of Liverpool at this moment of time’.

He added: “We understand what those families must have felt reading that report. It’s going to be a very emotional day on Sunday and we’ll support them in every way we can.”

The same should apply to every single person who attends a packed and emotionally-charged Anfield this Sunday. Moments like this should unite everybody.
