Liverpool v Man Utd - five classic games

Liverpool welcome fierce rivals Manchester United to Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday for the 188th meeting between English football's two most successful clubs.

Here, AFP Sports remembers some of the most memorable previous encounters between the sides:

LIVERPOOL 4 MANCHESTER UNITED 4 (First Division, August 1953)

The most high-scoring post-War game between the teams saw United take an early lead through Jack Rowley, only for goals from Louis Bimpson and Bill Jones to put Liverpool ahead at half-time.

After Roger Byrne equalised, Bimpson struck twice in quick succession to complete his hat-trick and put the hosts 4-2 up, but Eddie Lewis pulled one back for United before Tommy Taylor equalised by controversially bundling goalkeeper Charlie Ashcroft into the net.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 LIVERPOOL 1 (FA Cup final, May 1977)

Bob Paisley's Liverpool were the emerging force in English football and stood at the threshold of a period that would see them dominate the game at home and abroad in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Already league champions, they had a European Cup final against Borussia Moenchengladbach to come and were bidding to become the first English side ever to complete the Treble.

However, United were eager to atone for their shock loss to Southampton in the 1976 final and a shot from Lou Macari that deflected off team-mate Jimmy Greenhoff's chest gave them a 2-1 victory.

LIVERPOOL 3 MANCHESTER UNITED 3 (Premier League, January 1994)

Having endured two decades of Liverpool dominance, United had ended a 26-year wait for the English title in 1993 and arrived at Anfield the following January with a domestic Double in their sights.

Goals from Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Denis Irwin saw United race into a 3-0 lead inside just 24 minutes, only for Nigel Clough to hit a brace before centre-back Neil Ruddock headed in a memorable late equaliser.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 LIVERPOOL 1 (FA Cup fourth round, January 1999)

Michael Owen, who went on to play for United, headed Liverpool into a third-minute lead at Old Trafford and the home team looked destined for the exit until Dwight Yorke slammed in an 88th-minute equaliser.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then drilled home an injury-time winner, pre-empting his famous stoppage-time goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final four months later that saw United complete the Treble.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1 LIVERPOOL 4 (Premier League, March 2009)

United have generally lorded it over their Merseyside foes in the Premier League era, but Liverpool fans were given an afternoon to treasure at Old Trafford in March 2009.

United went into the game seven points clear of Rafael Benitez's side, but goals from Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena stunned the champions and breathed new life into the title race.
