Liverpool star Torres laments: We simply can't afford the best players

Fernando Torres admits Liverpool no longer have the financial muscle to compete with the best. The Spain striker says Liverpool desperately need reinforcements.

Fernando Torres admits Liverpool no longer have the financial muscle to compete with the best. The Spain striker says Liverpool desperately need reinforcements but concedes they will not make any high-profile signings in the transfer window because they cannot afford it. Star man: Torres in action at Portsmouth last weekend Torres said: 'Obviously we need players but the situation is really difficult because we don't have the money to bring in the best ones.' The Reds are in eighth spot in the Premier League, their American owners areunder pressure to cut their £240million debt, and they are out of the ChampionsLeague. They are also facing a £20m cut in income if they fail to qualify for theChampions League next season - and they are eight points away from fourth-placedAston Villa. 'Difficult situation': Spain striker Torres admits not everything is going to plan at Anfield this season But despite Liverpool's troubled season the Anfield hot-shot also insists sacking Rafael Benitez would not provide 'a solution' to Liverpool's problems. Torres, on whom Liverpool have relied heavily since he moved from AtleticoMadrid in 2007, said the players should take responsibility for their currentpredicament rather than manager Benitez. He said: 'I think sacking the manager is not a solution. The manager is not playing so we have to be positive with him, try to work with him. 'We are the main reason, the players are the persons that have to find a solution to the situation. The manager is not playing, so we have to play much better.' Torres added: 'We have to think that we are the squad that we have now and if we can bring in players perfect. If not we can't do anything about it. 'It's a difficult situation but every top team in the world goes sometimes through a bad situation like Liverpool now. 'Like every top team in the world, Liverpool will get over the situation. 'I have confidence in myself and my team. I know we are good enough. We wereplaying really well last season with the same team. We have to just recover thementality and the confidence in ourselves and everything will be different.' Saudi prince plans to buy George Gillett's stake in LiverpoolGerrard cannot take much more of the deepening crisis at LiverpoolSecond-best Manchester City sack the boss, rock-bottom Liverpool persist with Rafa while Spurs top the Premier League improvement tableLIVERPOOL FC
