Liverpool set to swoop for Bayern's Swiss star?

Xherdan Shaqiri could be the latest player to look to leave Bayern Munich due to a lack of first team opportunities. Pep Guardiola’s squad is full with midfield players looking to break into the star-studded first eleven. With the entry qualifications so high, and the number of available places so low however, a number of outstanding talents will inevitably be disappointed, and this could offer an opportunity for Premier League teams to step in.

Shaqiri moved to the Allianz at the beginning of last season, but due to selection and injury, he has made a mere 18 appearances in that time. It’s hardly the sort of exposure that a 22 year-old is looking for. The player’s brother has spoken out about the player’s plight by telling Swiss newspaper Blick: "Xherdan is 22. At this age, he needs to be playing regularly, which is not currently the case. We are waiting now until summer. Then, when clubs make approaches such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Inter Milan and other top clubs, we can listen to their offers. That said, Bayern still remains our first point of contact before we talk to other clubs."

Shaqiri would of course prefer to be playing regularly for the European champions, but if that isn’t likely to be the case, he will probably be compelled to move on or see his career stagnate. Bayern are not thought to be planning to release the player, and would look for a significant fee – perhaps in the region of £18 million or so.

There was talk that when Liverpool saw Mohamed Salah poached by Chelsea from under their noses, Shaqiri was next on their list. To date however there’s little indication that the club have renewed their interest. The news from the player’s brother however may just change that.
