Liverpool's Steven Gerrard: 100 Not Out

Steven Gerrard, Liverpool legend and Kop idol reached 100 Premier League goals for his boyhood club in their 2-2 draw against Newcastle this afternoon 19 October 2013. Gerrard fired in his 100th Premier League goal for the club via the penalty spot. As he said himself he would have liked it to come from open play but that was not to be. However that does not overshadow what a remarkable achievement that is.

Not many people can boast about scoring 100 Premier League goals let alone for one club which is his boyhood team. It is stuff of dreams. With that being said Steven Gerrard always had the talent from a very young age.

Gerrard was born in Whiston, Merseyside on 30 May 1980. No one would ever imagine what he would become. Gerrard had been scouted by Liverpool from a very young age and actually signed for the club at the age of 9. By this time everyone was already predicting big things in the future from the talented youngster.

Steven made his debut against Blackburn in 1998, when he came on as a late substitute. He scored his first Premier League goal for the club in a 4-1 win over S heffield Wednesday in 1999. Little did everyone know 14 years later he would still be at the club scoring his 100th Premier League goal. Gerrard started becoming a regular by the turn of the century.

In 2001 he became part of a Liverpool team that would go on to win the treble that year. Gerrard really started to develop into a great Midfielder. By 2003 he was named Liverpool captain and has remained the captain ever since. This year was his 10th anniversary of becoming Liverpool captain which hasn’t been matched by any other Liverpool player.

In 2005 Gerrard inspired his team to the greatest ever come back in Champions League history, by somehow managing to come back from 3-0 down at half time to lift the cup. That was an incredible day for all Liverpool supporters and proved what a phenomenon Gerrard was becoming. Once again in 2006 Gerrard was the savour in the F.A Cup final as Liverpool were down and out against West Ham but none other than Steven Gerrard stepped up to lead his team to victory.

Gerrard has won a number of personal awards which to his credit meant he was rated by almost everyone and not only by the Liverpool staff and supporters. In 2009 Zinedine Zidane said he considered Gerrard to be the best player in the world which is always great to hear from a fellow player who was very successful during his playing career.

Gerrard to date is the only player to ever score in the UEFA Cup final, League Cup final, Champions League final and the F.A Cup final. That is some achievement. Gerrard has also scored in 15 consecutive seasons for Liverpool and today as mentioned before he scored his 100th goal in the Premier League. Without a doubt Steven Gerrard is one of the best midfielders ever to grace a football pitch and I’m sure in the months and years to come he’ll score plenty more goals and hopefully lead Liverpool and England to glory.

"Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but, yes, I think he just might be. If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team. He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly, he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that - players like him are just born with that presence." – Zinedine Zidane
