Liverpool ready to make move for the right marquee signing

Marco Reus looks to be the main target for Brendan Rodgers as the Liverpool boss looks to get that marquee signing to strengthen a team that has been weakened by the sale to Barcelona of Luis Suarez. The Independent has reported that the Anfield manager is now ready to push ahead with bids for Marco Reus and Dejan Lovren whilst also resurrecting his interest in Ryan Bertrand.

Liverpool have been seemingly very quite with early acquisitions for Lambert, Lallana and Can. With Champions League commitments you have to wonder still at the depth of their squad and its ability to sustain the same high level of football as last season without the extra injection of talent.

According to a report in the Independent the Premier League runners-up have isolated the Borussia Dortmund star Marco Rues as an ideal fit to compliment an attacking line-up that hit the net 101 times last season but will need to adjust to the loss of Suarez. The report suggests that while there is interest from other clubs that Liverpool are an attractive option.

An interview with Rodgers in the Express suggests a pragmatic approach from Brendan Rodgers who will not panic-buy potentially the wrong player just because of the name:

"You only spend the money if the players are there," he said. "The good thing with the owners is the money is there if the right players are available.

"What we can't do is spend for the sake of it. The players we've brought in were players we wanted anyway.

"It was well-documented our squad last year was too thin so we needed to bring in players to get that level and depth up.

"Our signings are strategic signings. They are not just names. They all fit into the purpose of the team, but of course we want them to make a contribution. If that means we do not spend all the money or the net spend is the same, then so be it."

Liverpool are currently touring the US and were involved in a narrow 0-1 defeat with Roma as they step-up their preparations for the start of the Premier League season.
