Liverpool FC midfielder Jay Spearing broken ankle adds to Roy Hodgson injury frustration

Spearing 300 JAY SPEARING added to Roy Hodgson's injury woes as the Reds boss admitted trying to replace Steven Gerrard is an impossible task and the captain's injury has left him 'angry, frustrated and disappointed'. The young midfielder was in line to replace Gerrard against West Ham at Anfield this evening but suffered the blow of a suspected broken ankle in training yesterday. It is another unwanted problem for Hodgson. The Liverpool manager has tried to put a brave face on the hamstring problem Gerrard sustained playing for England on Wednesday night and did not ignite a war of words with the Football Association in his pre-match Press conference at Melwood yesterday. Privately, however, Hodgson - whose side face West Ham United at Anfield this evening - is infuriated about what has happened, a stance that is spread throughout the club. Gerrard has featured in each of England's last 12 games and no England player has amassed more than the 372 minutes of action in friendlies during 2010 than Liverpool's captain. Liverpool may well be reimbursed by the FA to the tune of almost £500,000 for the wages they would have had to pay Gerrard during his absence but they will take no solace in that at all.
