Liverpool can't tempt former Arsenal star Gilberto without Champions League bait

Liverpool are set to be rebuffed by former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva because they cannot offer him Champions League football. Gilberto, currently playing at Panathinaikos, has been linked with a return to England in the Greek media and is reportedly a target for Roy Hodgson. The Brazilian holding midfielder would be an ideal replacement for Javier Mascherano, who seems set to leave Anfield this summer, but the player's agent has played down a move. Greek tragedy: Brazil midfielder Gilberto Silva doesn't want to give up Champions League football for Liverpool 'Gilberto is very happy in Greece,' said his representative Frank Trimboli. 'Gilberto always wants to play at the highest level and Panathinaikos can offer him the chance to play in the Champions League.' Several Premier League clubs are thought to be interested in the South American, who was a big success at Arsenal before Arsene Wenger moved him on to Panathinaikos in 2008. He was a playing member of Brazil's squad at the World Cup in South Africa this summer which has been enough to convince Premiership manager's he can still do a job at the highest level. Unsettled Mascherano finally hooks up for talks with Liverpool boss HodgsonAgger wanted by Juve with Italians set to offer Poulsen to Liverpool in returnLIVERPOOL FC
