Liverpool: Ten January Transfers That Could Happen
With the January Transfer window looming – certain rumours have been thrown around since the beginning of the 12/13 season. Here I will take a look at the top 5 potential 'comings and goings' of the 'top 6' that will affect The Barclays Premier League.
With only £58,000,000 spent in The British Transfer Market last January – it is fair to say that compared to the summer window, top flight managers are much more reluctant to spend. That said – with such success stories like Papiss Cisse and Nikica Jelavic people may wonder why managers do not spend? Of course, the likes of big spenders Manchester City and Chelsea are in the latter stages of assembling their squads to challenge domestically and on the continent.
In this article – I will look at transfer rumours surrounding teams in The Barclays Premier League. The potential comings and goings and reasons behind the move.
Liverpool: Coming In
Reports of Walcott joining Liverpool were rife during the summer after contract negotiations appeared to have stalled at the Emirates. With Brendan Rodgers looking to bring in the winger to give Liverpool more width and attacking threat down the right hand side of the pitch. Whether or not The Reds will land Walcott in the January transfer window will very much depend on player himself. If the England international continues to reject Arsenal's terms for a new deal and Liverpool come in with a reasonable bid then The Gunners will have no choice but to sell, with fear of him leaving on a free next summer.
With The Reds failing to bring in another striker after Andy Carroll left for West Ham on loan Demba Ba will be a prime target in the January transfer window. He would provide much needed cover in case their main goal threat Luis Suarez gets injured and would always provide competition for places up front, which may be exactly what Fabio Borini needs to get scoring in the League.
Brendan Rodgers is well aware that club captain and hero Steven Gerrard is entering the twilight of his career, with this in mind he is still looking to bring in class replacements in the midfield area. Ander Herrera is one of those tipped to be heading to Anfield in January. Impressing in his clubs Europa League run last season. Liverpool can expect to spend around ₤15 million on the player but that could rise with a host of other European clubs reportedly interested.
Zaha is wanted by Liverpool for the same reasons as Walcott, he is a winger with pace who will give The Reds much needed width. The 19-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time and Liverpool look like they could best accommodate England Under 21 star. Having amassed 105 appearances for his South London club already he has the experience and the skill the excel at the highest level.
Although the Belgium international only arrived at PSV in 2011 he is already attracting attention from the Premier League big hitters. Notching 25 goals in 38 appearances for the the club to date, including four in five so far this season. A move to Anfield would give the reds some much needed variety in their attacking line-up and could be the next Belgian to take the English top flight by storm.
Liverpool: Going Out
Currently on loan at West Ham, Andy Carroll we almost certainly leave Anfield, be it this coming transfer window or next summer. Claiming that he didn't get a far chance at Liverpool and he must leave if he is to improve and gain more first team action. West Ham will be keen to secure the services of the striker for longer than one season but will face competition from Newcastle as they look to bring back their old talisman.
After an unimpressive first season with The Reds Downing would have been looking to improve quickly this term buy has found himself frozen out of the Liverpool starting XI, seemingly not in Brendan Rodgers plans for the future. Downing has vowed to fight for his place but Liverpool's owners may want to cut their losses and offload the high-earning forward.
Spearing had only appeared in the Europa League for Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers and quickly found himself out of the first team after the signing of Joe Allen from Swansea. He was sent out on loan to Bolton for the remainder of this season and could end up singing for the club permanently as it looks like he will be unlikely to force his way back into the first team at Liverpool.
Doni was reportedly told he could leave Anfield after Rodgers wanted to bring in Wolves Keeper De Vries to compete with Pepe Reine. No suitors were found for the former Roma keeper during the summer and was subsequently included in the teams Premier League squad
After spending last season on loan in the French league with Lille many expected Cole to leave in the summer transfer window with QPR and Tottenham reported as possible suitors but a move away failed to materialise. Cole injured himself in his first game for Liverpool this season and has not played since, fuelling speculation that Rodgers may be looking to off load the midfielder who is a burden on the clubs wage bill while he not playing..
