His reputation has burgeoned since leaving Tottenham three yearsago. Ziegler arrived at White Hart Lane from Grasshoppers Zurich andinitially impressed under Jacques Santini and Martin Jol in his firstseason, walking away with a young player of the year award.

Buthe struggled to develop after being sent out on loan to Hamburg andafter a futher indifferent spell at Wigan in 2006 he was offloaded toItaly.

He is a versatile player who can play as left-back or left winger, just the type of player Roy Hodgson will need as Liverpool look for a further improvements to his fortunes.

Italian giants Juventus are believed to also be in the running to sign Ziegler, who could be tempted to link up again with his former Sampdoria coach LuigiDel Nieri.
