Liverpool star Torres issues ultimatum to owners: Buy big or we'll fail again!

Fernando Torres has called on Liverpool's owners to splash the cash on new players to halt the club's desperate downward slide. [LNB]After finishing second to Barclays Premier League champions Manchester United last season, Liverpool were expected to be serious title contenders this campaign. [LNB]But midway through the season, the Reds languish in seventh in the table, are out of the Champions League and were sent crashing out of the FA Cup by Championship strugglers Reading, at Anfield on Wednesday. [LNB] The short and Long of it: Reading's Shane Long dumps Liverpool out of the FA Cup[LNB]And Torres has sent a chilling warning to co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, demanding that they back under-fire manager Rafa Benitez, or risk being cast further adrift. [LNB]The star-striker said: 'It's frustrating. We finished second last season. Thisseason should have been a turning point for us - a chance to dosomething great. [LNB]Down in the dumps: Torres will be out for six weeks [LNB][LNB]'Manchester United sold Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, while Chelsea didn't sign anyone. But it hasn't been. It's now the owners'turn. They have to sign players so that this does not happen again.[LNB]'If we want to compete with United and Chelsea we need a much, muchmore complete squad. We need more genuinely first-class players and wecan't let our best players leave.'[LNB]Liverpool's only real chance of silverware this season lies inthe Europa League and Torres insists they must win it to salvage adire season[LNB]The Spaniard, who added to Liverpool's woes, after it was revealed he faces six weeks on the sidelines with knee ligament damage, told Four-Four-Two magazine: 'We didn't want to win the Europa League at the start of the season butit's a reality now. [LNB]'Now we have to win it. Anything less than winning the tournament wouldbe terrible. We need to improve, we need to take responsibility and weneed to get into the top four and win something.
