Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing wants Europa League qualification

Stewart Downing hopes Liverpool's Europa League campaign does not end for the benefit of himself and the club.

The Premier League outfit visit Udinese on Thursday knowing a win is the only result which would guarantee their place in the knockout stages. And Downing, who has found himself on the fringes of Brendan Rodgers' Premier League team, is desperate to progress, which could also be achieved with a draw and favourable results elsewhere, in order to continue to get opportunities.

"It has been good," Downing told Liverpool's official website.

"I've had a couple of good goals and some good performances.

"It's obviously nice to play - that's where most of my appearances have been this season.

"It would be nice to go through, because there are some big teams who are going to drop out from the Champions League. It would be a good test for us. I'm hoping it goes our way."
