Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole expected to make his return at Tottenham

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is hoping Joe Cole can return to his squad in time for next Sunday's Premier League clash at Tottenham.

Cole has missed the last five matches with hamstring trouble, including Saturday's win against one of his old clubs West Ham.

Hodgson said: 'Joe should be back for Sunday. We were hoping he would be back to face West Ham, but it has taken that little bit longer.

Ready for his return: Joe Cole

Joe is not that far away really, so hopefully he will have recovered in time for Tottenham.'

Speaking to Liverpool's website, Hodgson added: 'Hamstring injuries are tricky and I'm afraid we can only rely on what the Sports Science people tell us, and if they say he needs more time we just have to wait.'

Liverpool are now up to ninth in the Premier League, just six points off fourth placed Manchester City, following their comfortable win over the Hammers.

Hodgson hit out at Liverpool's critics after the game, insisting they wrote the Merseysiders off too early this season.
