Liverpool lose out on Mark van Bommel as midfielder closes in on Wolsfburg move

Mark van Bommel is set to close the door on a move to Liverpool by signing for Wolfsburg. [LNB]The Bayern Munich midfielder is out of contract in the summer and can leave now for a relatively small fee. [LNB]Liverpool were keen on the Holland international but hoped to sign him on a free and have other more pressing targets who represent better value for money. [LNB] Van not the man for Liverpool: Van Bommel is staying in the Bundesliga[LNB]Tottenham and Manchester City have been linked, but the 33-year-old's hopes of securing a lucrative two-and-a-half-year contract have put off suitors. [LNB]Wolfsburg's persistence appears to have paid off and it is thought they have persuaded Van Bommel to stay in the Bundesliga and sign an 18-month deal with the under-performing side. [LNB]Beleaguered boss Steve McClaren has made it clear he wants reinforcements during the January transfer window and World Cup finalist Van Bommel is admired as much for his leadership qualities as his tough-tackling style. [LNB]Meanwhile, McClaren's future has again been brought into question amid claims that Martin Jol has been discreetly talking to the club about the manager's post.
