Liverpool FC's Fernando Torres played through pain barrier

GOAL-HERO Fernando Torres today revealed he played through the pain barrier to help put Liverpool's season back on track.[LNB]The Reds' leading striker was a major doubt ahead of yesterday's Anfield showdown with Manchester United as he was still feeling the effects of a groin problem.[LNB]With Liverpool enduring their worst run of form for 22 years, however, Torres was desperate to help stop the rot but it was only after a long discussion with boss Rafa Benitez yesterday morning that he was given the green light to start.[LNB]That decision, though, spectacularly paid off as Torres scored the first and unsettled Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic - who was eventually sent-off - throughout in Liverpool's deserved 2-0 win.[LNB]Torres is unlikely to play in Wednesday's Carling Cup tie at Arsenal but he should return at Fulham next weekend and says the aches and pains with which he is now dealing have been eased considerably by the result.[LNB]'I was not 100% fit but I wanted to play and it was worth it,' said Torres, who damaged his adductor during Spain's win in Armenia two weeks ago. 'We knew it was going to be a risk and I felt some pain in some of the movements that I made before hand but during the game it was ok.[LNB]'I just wanted to play so much. When the team is losing and not playing well, it is so hard to watch and you just want to help.[LNB]'It was like Stevie (Gerrard) in the Champions League game. He wanted to play, he wasn't fit but he is the leader of the team.'
