Liverpool FC's new head of sports science 300[LNB]LIVERPOOL'S head of sports medicine Dr Peter Brukner insists sending Jamie Carragher for surgery on his dislocated left shoulder is "the best option".[LNB]The Reds were rocked yesterday by the news that the inspirational centre-back is set to be out for three months with the injury he suffered in the closing stages of last Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.[LNB]Initially, it was hoped Carragher would only be sidelined for a month but scans revealed significant damage to the joint.[LNB]As a result the 32-year-old will have keyhole surgery on Friday and is unlikely to be back playing until late February.[LNB] Brukner says the procedure will drastically reduce the chances of Carragher suffering the same injury again.[LNB]'In the 24 hours after Sunday's game we got as much information about the injury as we could,' he said.[LNB]'We got a number of specialist opinions on the best way to go forward. We have involved Jamie in all the discussions and we've decided to go ahead with some keyhole surgery.[LNB]'We decided it was the best option because not having the surgery leaves you with a very high risk of the dislocation happening again - probably more than 50%.[LNB]'We weren't prepared to take that risk. Having the surgery doesn't completely mean you're not at risk of dislocating, but the risk is down to about 10%.[LNB]'With Jamie and Roy and the medical staff we decided to take the safe option, and then he'll be right for the last third of the season.'
