THE stakes could hardly be higher. Liverpool head into tomorrow's crunch showdown with Manchester United desperate to break a miserable run of four straight defeats.[LNB]Victory over their fierce rivals would cut the gap between the clubs to four points and breathe new life into the Reds' flagging campaign.[LNB]However, another defeat would make it the Reds' worst run for 56 years and any genuine hopes of challenging for the Premier League crown would be dashed.[LNB]The stage is set for another thrilling chapter in the history between the two clubs.[LNB]JAMES PEARCE looks back at some of their most memorable clashes.[LNB]LIVERPOOL 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 1 - September 13 2009[LNB] SUBSTITUTE Ryan Babel's late winner earned Rafa Benitez his first league win over United. Carlos Tevez put United ahead early on but Liverpool equalised courtesy of Wes Brown's own goal.[LNB]In the second half the Reds took control and deservedly claimed the points when Babel converted Dirk Kuyt's cross.[LNB]United's misery was compounded late on when Nemanja Vidic was dismissed for a second bookable offence.[LNB]Liverpool's first league victory over United at Anfield since 2001 was achieved without Fernando Torres while Steven Gerrard only came on for the last 22 minutes.[LNB]LIVERPOOL 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 0 - March 2 2003[LNB] LIVERPOOL lifted the Worthington Cup at the Millennium Stadium after a sweet final victory over United. The Reds took the lead six minutes before the break when Steven Gerrard's 25-yarder deflected off David Beckham and looped over Fabien Barthez.[LNB]Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was the Reds' hero as he pulled off a string of fine saves to protect their slender advantage. The trophy was secured four minutes from time when Dietmar Hamann released Michael Owen who fired past Barthez.[LNB]LIVERPOOL 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 0 - March 31 2001[LNB] THE Reds had taken just a point from their previous two league games against Leicester and Derby but Gerard Houllier's side rose to the occasion to stun the champions-elect at Anfield.[LNB]Steven Gerrard provided the inspiration as he broke the deadlock in the 16th minute. Gerrard boke clear from halfway and then unleashed a 25-yard thunderbolt which left Fabien Barthez with no chance.[LNB]Robbie Fowler doubled the Reds' lead before the break as he capitalised on Gary Neville's slip to finish Gerrard's cross.[LNB]Danny Murphy was sent off midway through the second half after picking up a second yellow card but there was no way back for United.
