Liverpool FC star Lucas shaped by tough times

LUCAS believes the traumas Liverpool have suffered this season have been key to helping him develop into a first team regular.[LNB]The Brazilian midfielder has played in every Premier League game this season and, in recent months, has been one of the Reds' most consistent performers.[LNB]But despite never hiding when results have gone against Liverpool and working tirelessly for the team, Lucas still finds a significant number of fans sceptical of his ability.[LNB]He is now used to the criticism that comes his way but that does not mean for a moment Lucas is fine with the situation - far from it.[LNB]If anything there have been times when it has led him to question whether he made the right choice when picking Liverpool after he left Gremio in May 2007.[LNB]Happily, though, Lucas has battled on and is now in no doubt that he can play a role in helping Liverpool push for the Champions League - starting at Wigan on Monday.[LNB]'It's been a very difficult time both for the team and for me,' said Lucas. 'I know a lot of people have been unhappy with my performances, particularly at the start of the season.[LNB]'The team wasn't doing well and results were bad. But I've learned a lot more about myself and become a stronger person and player. It has made me desperate to prove people wrong.[LNB]'There have been times (in the past) when I thought I may have made the wrong decision but now I am sure that I have made the right one.[LNB]'My game has changed a lot since leaving Brazil. I was able to attack more at Gremio because I played with two defensive midfielders, In England you have more responsibility.[LNB]'I still think I have some work to do if all the fans are going to believe in me. I'm happy and I feel I'm improving. But it isn't about me, it's about the club doing well.'
