AS the most successful club in the country, it's incredible to think only three Liverpool players have ever got their hands on the World Cup.[LNB]Roger Hunt, Gerry Byrne and Ian Callaghan were part of Alf Ramsey's squad in 1966 when England were crowned world champions for the first and only time.[LNB]While Callaghan figured in just one group match against France and Byrne remained on the bench throughout the tournament, teammate Hunt played a much more prominent role.[LNB]The Reds striker played in all six games and scored three goals on the way to Wembley where West Ham United's Bobby Moore became the only England captain to hold aloft the Jules Rimet Trophy.[LNB] Now, 44 summers later, Hunt dearly hopes it is time for another Liverpool player to join him on the exclusive World Cup roll of honour.[LNB]Rio Ferdinand's withdrawal from the England squad has seen the captain's armband handed to Steven Gerrard.[LNB]As well as Gerrard, Argentina skipper Javier Mascherano could also become the first Liverpool player to captain his country to World Cup glory.[LNB]Of course, Hunt's allegiance is firmly with England and nothing would please him more than seeing Gerrard lead the Three Lions all the way.[LNB]'As vice-captain, Steven was always next in line should Rio Ferdinand get injured,' said Hunt.[LNB]'He's worn the armband before when Ferdinand has been injured. They will be proud moments for him. But nothing could compare to winning the tournament. If England were to do that, Steven will now be the one who lifts the World Cup.'
