Fernando Torres 300[LNB]REDS fans all over the world are reeling from the news that Fernando Torres' knee injury has ruled him out for the rest of the season.[LNB]The Spaniard had his right knee operated on over the weekend and will miss the Reds' Premier League run-in along with an emotional reunion with his old club Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals.[LNB]Amidst the sympathy felt for Torres at this latest hammer blow, some fans on the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo forums are questioning whether this course of action has been taken mainly for the benefit of the Spanish national team ahead of this summer's World Cup.[LNB]S.Henchoz wrote, "Fernando Torres is probably the best out and out striker in the world.[LNB]"Liverpool FC pay him (rightly) £100k a week or thereabouts for his goals and ability to bring revenue to the club.[LNB]"Why then are we allowing him to have this operation before the world cup, when even a 75% fit Torres may help us win the Europa Cup (like it or loathe it, it's a trophy)![LNB]"If it's because he could cause more damage and affect next season, fair enough.[LNB]"If it's about keeping Torres "sweet" because he wants to play in the World Cup then i would question the manager.....Just because Rafa is Spanish doesn't mean we should be sacrificing players.[LNB]"Would Ferguson allow Rooney to have an op or would he play him at 75% fitness and gamble he'd be ok for the World Cup ??"
