Liverpool FC fans letters: FA Cup shocks are nothing new

ALL this talk about how we were almost beaten by Reading made me think about other times when we were given a wake-up call.[LNB]Even Shanks had his almost games. A 2-1 victory over fellow First Division side West Brom in the 1964/65 season saw the Reds safely negotiate the first hurdle and the draw for round four could not have been kinder to Liverpool - a home tie against Stockport County, who were propping up the entire Football League.[LNB]Progress into round five seemed a formality. So much so, that manager Bill Shankly decided to miss the match and instead embark on a spying mission to Germany, where he would run the rule over Liverpool's forthcoming European Cup opponents, FC Cologne.[LNB]It was the first senior game he had missed since taking charge in 1959 and he'd have been glad he did as the minnows from Manchester almost pulled off one of the biggest cup shocks ever - a 51st minute goal by Gordon Milne eventually sparing Liverpool's blushes after the visitors had taken an 18th minute lead.[LNB]FA Cup shocks are nothing new - every top team has had at least one.[LNB]Oh, by the way, we went on to win the trophy that year - our first ever FA Cup.[LNB]DaveyMac[LNB]AFTER five years spending more than £250m on more than 50 players we are no nearer to winning the league.[LNB]This is a results driven business and it appears Rafa does not know how to win the league.[LNB]John_Boy
