Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has revealed he was nearly forced to quit the game this summer, aged just 24, due to a back injury. The centre-back claimed that the pain he was suffering was so bad he seriously considered retiring, but also hinted that he himself was to blame for the injury. The Denmark international, who cost £5.8million from Brondby in 2006, made his return to the first-team squad as a substitute during last Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. And after Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel failed to cope with the power and pace of Didier Drogba and Chelsea's attack, Agger might well find himself thrust back into the starting line-up sooner rather than later. Ukraine v England Such a prospect seemed a long way away to Agger in the summer. He said: 'My back was hurting so badly that I considered stopping playing. I asked myself if it was worth continuing playing. When you can't even lift your own child out of bed, then something is terribly wrong.' 'I've learned that I must look after my body more. I've done some stupid things and it has cost me. It has cost me a lot.'
