Liverpool could lose Lucas as Alberto Aquilani deal draws closer

In a week which has already seen the departure of Xabi Alonso, who signed a four-year contract with Real Madrid, rumours that Lucas is negotiating a return to his homeland to join Corinthians are circulating and the 22-year-old is doing little to deny them. In the two seasons Lucas has been on the books at Anfield he has made just 25 league starts and, according to the Sun, has run out of patience and is in talks with Corinthians' chief executive Andre Sanches. "You have to see what Benitez has planned but the president of Corinthians already knows I am interested and what I want," Lucas said. The Brazilian may have hoped Alonso's departure to the Bernabeu would present him with an opportunity to prove himself worthy of being a more regular feature in Benitez's plans, but news of the imminent arrival of Alberto Aquilani from Roma looks likely to mean Lucas will remain further down the pecking order. Italian international, Aquilani's £20million deal is expected to be completed on Friday, and Benitez has said he is thrilled to have landed a player he believes will be a major asset to the Anfield-based club. "Roma have allowed us to talk with him, so that's good and positive. He is a player with the quality we are looking for," Benitez said. "He can play a little bit higher than Javier Mascherano, maybe between him and Steven Gerrard. "I think the signing should excite the fans. He is a good passer, the final ball is good, and he also works. If he can settle down properly in England he can be a very good addition."
