Liverpool are off to Crystal Palace as they scrape a win against Bolton

Bolton Wanderers and Liverpool met at the Macron Stadium to fight for their place in the FA Cup final and boy was it tense.

Just minutes into the game, Liverpool managed to miss the leading goal opportunity, as Lallana fired a low cross into the box – but no one was quite there to receive it.

And for a while longer, Stevie G’s fairytale ending to his career at Liverpool seemed bleak as Neil Lennon’s team produced a similarly admirable defensive performance to the one which had earned them a goalless draw at Anfield.

Bolton’s 59th-minute penalty pushed them into the lead after Gudjohnsen netted a right-footed shot past Mignolet but they soon found themselves down to 10 men when Danns was sent off for a second bookable offence for a foul on Allen.

Sturridge then strutted on the pitch to hopefully get a goal in the final 20 minutes but it was Sterling who managed to score the equaliser at the 85th minute, as he slotted Can’s pass through Lonergan’s legs, marking Liverpool’s 700th FA Cup goal.

The score didn’t stay at a 1-1 draw for much longer, as playmaker Coutinho took advantage of Bolton’s crumbling defence, bending a shot into the top corner sealing a 2-1 win for Liverpool.

Despite their scraping victory, something managed to overshadow the Red’s all-important victory this evening, Steven Gerrard’s 700th appearance in a Liverpool shirt – he even had the number embossed at the back of his boots.
