Fernando Torrres sent a signal of intent about Liverpool's title bid by signing a new four-year deal worth over £20million, with an option for a further year. Liverpool's striker helped disperse misgivings over a lack of transfer funds for Rafa Benitez by committing his future to Anfield onthe eve of another Barclays PremierLeague campaign. The deal sends Torres' weekly pay soaring from £70,000 to £110,000 and was signed in the build-up to tomorrow's opening game at Tottenham, after being agreed last season. The 25-year-old has ensured Liverpool start with renewed confidence, according to boss Benitez. 'He is already one of the best strikers in the game and, at his age, he can only get better,' he said. 'He has shown how much he wants to achieve success with us by pledging his future to Liverpool. He is a special talent and he wants to keep improving.' Although Benitez's spending has been reined in he dismissed any misgivings over his relationship with American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. But he is ready to resume hostilities with arch-rival Sir Alex Ferguson. Told the Manchester United boss rated Chelsea the biggest threat to the champions and was dismissive of neighbours City, Benitez replied: 'He said that? Really? I've noidea if he genuinely believes Chelsea will pose a bigger threat than us. 'There are a lot of top sides who can be very, very strong and you have to be ready for that challenge. Would I like my relationship with Ferguson to be better? I'd like to win every game, that is all. If we can do that, let's see how it affects the relationship. 'And City are one of the teams who can pose a threat, without a doubt. I can see them being a real problem for United.'
