LFC High Court battle: the key players

08 October 2010 17:31
With the ownership of Liverpool Football Club set to be thrashed out in the High Court in London in the near future, we take a look at the key players who will be involved in the process.[LNB]Martin Broughton - LFC Chairman[LNB] Martin Broughton was appointed as in the new independent chairman of Liverpool Football Club on 16 April 2010. The 63-year-arrived at Anfield on the back of his fine business pedigree across various markets, acting not only as chairman of British Airways but also Deputy President of the Confederation of British Industry.[LNB]His previous positions include chairman of the British Horseracing Board, where he played a key role in saving the sport from insolvency, as well as chairman of British American Tobacco - during which time he raised a few eyebrows by stating he would not like his own children to start smoking.[LNB]While his life-long support of Chelsea was a minor sticking point for some Reds when his appointment was announced - compounded when he refused to attend Liverpool's home game against the Londoners last May, citing divided loyalties - Broughton's silent but seemingly deadly role in the current takeover negotiations has cemented his status as a man with LFC's interests at heart.[LNB]Eleventh-hour attempts by Tom Hicks and George Gillett to block the NESV takeover led to the Texan branding the £300m sale of the Reds unlawful, but Broughton's stance has been resolute, insisting Hicks and Gillett had attempted to restructure the board of LFC and had frustrated potential sales of the club without the legal authority for either of these actions.
