Let's be more clinical, says Benitez as Kuyt makes it alright on the night

Rafa Benitez rued his Liverpool side’s wastefulness near goal as they came perilously close to missing out on maximum points against the weakest team in their Champions League group at Anfield on Wednesday night. Dirk Kuyt's first-half injury time goal proved enough to secure a 1-0 win, but Liverpool were living dangerously by the end as striker Adamo Coulibaly twice threatened to haul Debrecen, the Hungarian champions, level. Benitez said: ‘The lesson for us was that if you don’t take your chances and the other team keep working hard, you can end up paying the price. ‘I felt we were in control throughout, and limited their scoring opportunities, but while the lead is only one goal, you never know. ‘They put us under a bit of pressure at the end, so maybe we need to be more clinical about finishing off opportunities. They hit us on the counterattack once or twice and we could not score a second goal. But we have to be really pleased to have started the group with three points, and we are winning games in a row now, which is important for the players. ‘I wasn’t surprised by them because I knew they would be well organised, but we stuck at it and deserved to come out on top.’
