Kuyt keen to avoid repeat
30 Sep 2008 - 08:50:41
Netherlands international Dirk Kuyt has told his Liverpool team-mates that Wednesday's Champions League match with PSV Eindhoven is likely to be a tough affair.
The Reds have made an excellent start to their Group D campaign, winning 2-1 in Marseille two weeks ago while PSV lost 3-0 at home to Atletico Madrid.
Rafa Benitez's side beat PSV three times during their run to the 2006-07 Champions League Final, but Kuyt insists: "They are very different from the last time we played against them.
"Gomez, the goalkeeper, is now at Spurs, Phillip Cocu has retired and a lot of other players have also gone to other clubs.
"They are a totally different side but they are still the best in Holland. They have won the league six times in a row, I think, so they're a very good team and we have to be ready."
Liverpool needed to win their last three group games in the 2007-08 campaign to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament and Kuyt added: "We did talk about not making the same mistakes as last year before the Marseille game.
"You don't want to play games in the group stages like we did last year. You want to get to the next round as quickly as possible.
"We overcame a massive obstacle in beating Marseille on their own pitch but we know we could still have problems if we don't beat PSV. We have to focus on PSV and remember that last year we were beaten at home by Marseille.
"There are no easy opponents in our group so we have to make sure we get the points really early."
