iverpool forward Milan Jovanovic has branded the Carling Cup exit to League Two side Northampton a "catastrophe".[LNB] The Serbia international got the Reds off to an ideal start with his first goal for the club after just nine minutes.[LNB]However, it went rapidly downhill from there and although David Ngog snatched a late equaliser in extra time to make it 2-2 Liverpool went out on penalties, the first time they had gone out to fourth-tier opposition.[LNB]"Catastrophe. I am so disappointed," said Jovanovic on the result.[LNB]"We know this is not Liverpool. It is very bad.[LNB]"I am so surprised by the performance. I have not got enough experience of English football but I didn't expect this.[LNB]"Northampton played a really good game. We played a bad game - but this is football."[LNB]Jovanovic added in the Liverpool Echo: "I am so disappointed. We all are.[LNB]"We are sorry for the result but we have to move on now."[LNB]Liverpool's league position of 16th is false as they have played Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United in their opening fixtures as well as having a tough trip to Birmingham.[LNB]But the nature of the early results means they are still only three points adrift of fourth-placed City, which is why it is important for Roy Hodgson's big names to produce a performance against Sunderland.[LNB]"Every game from now is very important," Jovanovic told the Liverpool Echo.[LNB]"We have got five points from five games. It is not enough but we have had five very difficult games.[LNB]"We just have to pass one difficult test (against Sunderland) and maybe in the next three or four games we can start to collect a lot of points.[LNB]"We have to stick together."[LNB]Fellow forward Ryan Babel admitted he "failed personally" on Wednesday night.[LNB]"No excuses for last nite. We weren't good enough," he wrote on his Twitter page.[LNB]"And I failed personally. Haven't lost faith, so I keep working."
