Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan is edging closer to a new contract after talks advanced with the club this week.

The 23-year-old academy graduate's current deal expires in the summer after he was given only a one-year extension following 20 months out with a knee problem.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his desire to keep the full-back for the longer term and Press Association Sport understands Flanagan's agent and chief executive Ian Ayre had positive negotiations this week with suggestions he could sign a three-year contract before the end of the week.

Earlier this month Klopp said: "Of course, 'Flanno' is our boy and we'll do everything we can to come together, and hopefully in the end it's a positive solution for both sides."
