JOHN ALDRIDGE: Will Liverpool FC take their perfect derby chance?

28 November 2009 06:40
TOMORROW'S derby could be the perfect game to finally get Liverpool's campaign going.[LNB]Victory would act as a springboard and take a lot of the pressure off both the players and the manager.[LNB]In fact tomorrow could be the defining moment of the season for each club. Both are really lacking in confidence and in need of a boost.[LNB]Liverpool have to start winning. Having gone out of the Champions League, the priority now is qualifying for next season's competition.[LNB]There is already a five-point gap between us and fourth placed Tottenham and we can't allow that to get any bigger.[LNB]It's the first time under the manager we haven't made the knockout stages and it is a wake-up call for the club in general.[LNB]The performance against Debrecen in midweek was really poor. They made it difficult for us but there was a real lack of creativity.[LNB]Fiorentina and Lyon both put them to the sword but we struggled and it just summed up our efforts in Europe this season.[LNB]Most people expected us to cruise through the group but I don't think anyone realised how good Fiorentina are. We took qualifying for granted but after winning our first game things went horribly wrong.[LNB]Going out is a massive blow both financially and in terms of prestige.
