John Aldridge: I’d take nine-point penalty if it meant the end for Hicks and Gillett

Tom Hicks and George Gillett 300[LNB]THE most important week in the history of Liverpool Football Club - that, simply, is the only way you can describe what we are heading in to.[LNB]It should come as no surprise that Tom Hicks is trying every trick in the book to hang on to his stake in the club and he is resembling a dog with a bone - he just won't let go.[LNB]So even though it is encouraging that New England Sports Ventures want to invest in Liverpool, we have got to be cautious going into the court case that will decide our fate.[LNB]What I have found most encouraging in all this is the fact we have got some very clever and astute in the non-owner positions on Liverpool's board.[LNB] Quite simply, I have to take my hat off to Martin Broughton, Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre for the work they have done; I know a lot of supporters have been suspicious about them and that, in some ways, is natural given the way everything has gone since February 2007. But it has now become crystal clear that they have been fighting the good fight.[LNB]It has also confirmed the suspicions we had about Hicks and Gillett throughout were true - the money for Craig Bellamy, Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch and so many others has gone to pay off the bank.[LNB]Liverpool's squad has been completely devalued and, with due respect to certain players, our second team is not a patch on the reserve side Chelsea can field - that never used to be the case before Hicks and Gillett rode in to town.
