Javier questions red card
25 Mar 2008 - 07:19:03
Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has admitted to being mystified as to why he was sent off during the Reds' 3-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday.
The Argentina midfielder was ordered off shortly before half-time at Old Trafford, being shown a second yellow card by referee Steve Bennett after questioning the booking of team-mate Fernando Torres.
However, Mascherano is certain that he did not swear at the match official and is not too sure why he was dismissed.
He told the Daily Echo: "I do not know why I was sent off.
"I asked the referee what was happening. I did not swear. I was not aggressive and I did not confront him. All I did was ask him what was happening, nothing else.
"When he showed me the second yellow card and sent me off I could not believe it.
"I am sorry to my team-mates because that meant we went down to ten men and that made things even more difficult for us."
Mascherano could yet face further trouble over his red card at Old Trafford, with the FA likely to look at the incident after the South American failed to leave the pitch promptly when he was ordered off.
