Jamie Redknapp: Premier League would rue absence of Paul Scholes

ShareIt's not for me to tell Paul Scholes what to do next, but if he is going to retire, the Premier League will be poorer for his absence. [LNB]He may not be the box-to-box player of old (he was a striker when he first burst on to the scene), but he is still the best passer in the game. [LNB]Only one player could step into his boots at Manchester United. And my dad will be desperate not to sell him.[LNB] One of a kind: Scholes remains one of the best passers in the game[LNB]THE SAR OF THE SHOWIt showed more than ever what Manchester United will miss with Edwin van der Sar retiring. It's not just his confident handling, shot-stopping and calmness, he is very comfortable with the ball at this feet. [LNB]He's a sweeper-keeper, like the modern goalies have to be. He's an expert at it. Tomas Kuszczak looked a bag of nerves.[LNB] Going Dutch: Sir Alex will find it very hard to replace his current No 1[LNB]   More from Jamie Redknapp... Jamie Redknapp: My dream XI from Sir Alex's golden era at Manchester United09/05/11 Jamie Redknapp: Carrick quality key to United's imperious display08/05/11 Jamie Redknapp: How the Old Trafford decider will play out07/05/11 Jamie Redknapp: Goal-line technology is just a matter of dealing with FACTS01/05/11 Jamie Redknapp: Why my dad joined Sir Alex in saying 'no' to signing Raul25/04/11 Jamie Redknapp: Torres making all the right moves on and off the field24/04/11 Jamie Redknapp: Parker's award is a victory over cheats and con-artists22/04/11 Jamie Redknapp: Yaya's strength and power is too much for United17/04/11 VIEW FULL ARCHIVE  FERGIE OUT? NO WAY!If Sir Alex Ferguson was thinking about retirement, surely there is no chance of that now. Liverpool are reawakening under Kenny Dalglish, who has now been given a three-year deal. [LNB]And the new City are in the Champions League and have won their first trophy. So Sir Alex will believe he has new challenges ahead, or at least fresh meat to devour. He'll love trying to see both off.[LNB]GETTING NOISIER Book your seats in front of the TV for August 7. That's when Sky will broadcast the Community Shield from Wembley and the small matter of the next Manchester derby. [LNB]I'm delighted for City fans. They've waited a long time to win a trophy and many have stayed loyal, in the face of their local neighbours growing into modern global giants. Now they are noisy too.[LNB]PRINCE CHARLESRoberto Martinez must have given the team talk of his life yesterday. His team were losing 2-0 in their game of the season until he found the inspiration and tactical nous to conjure a second-half display that overcame West Ham and relegated them. [LNB]He is helped, of course, by the wizardry of Charles N'Zogbia, who has been in great form. Can he keep them up?[LNB]KEEP SPINNING, DJI've written this before: I love the way DJ Campbell plays, as if every game is his last. He will take that quality to Old Trafford next week where I hope Blackpool get the result they need to stay up. [LNB]Survival Sunday sees five teams divided by one point - only two will survive. I've been involved in a day like this as a player. I don't like that relegation on my cv.[LNB] Sounds good: DJ Campbell is the man with the talent to keep Blackpool up[LNB]RETURN OF THE KINGI don't know whether to feel sorry for Ledley King or to congratulate him. If he stays fit, he is the best defender in the country. He has not trained, but was brilliant at Anfield yesterday in what was a significant result for Tottenham after a difficult spell. [LNB]He makes such a difference when he plays. Michael Dawson continues to grow as a defender, both with club and country, but Ledley is a thoroughbred. I hope he can keep going.[LNB] Simply the best: King was immense for Tottenham at Anfield[LNB] [LNB]  Explore more:People: Paul Scholes, Alex Ferguson, Michael Dawson, Ledley King, Edwin Van Der Sar, Roberto Martinez Places: Liverpool, Manchester
