Ian Callaghan in action for Liverpool against Benfica(320)[LNB]FIFTY years ago today, Liverpool made light work of Bristol Rovers at Anfield with a comprehensive 4-0 win.[LNB]After signing professional terms just six weeks earlier, a 17-year-old Ian Callaghan made his debut for Bill Shankly's team that day.[LNB]Callaghan was the ninth player to be tried in the troublesome outside right position that season.[LNB]His contribution to three of the goals meant he would be the last.[LNB]The supporters, players and even the referee gave the youngster a standing ovation that day.[LNB]This was the first of an incredible 857 appearances for Liverpool that spanned the best part of two decades.[LNB]It is widely accepted Callaghan's record will never be beaten.[LNB]Closest to him on the club's list of all time appearances are Emlyn Hughes and Ray Clemence, who both played 665 times for the Reds.[LNB]Jamie Carragher will make his 625th Liverpool appearance against West Ham on Monday and has every chance of moving to second on the list before he eventually hangs up his boots.[LNB]At 32, though, he concedes there is little chance of him threatening Callaghan's tally.[LNB]In a new book to mark the 50th anniversary of Callaghan's debut - 'Cally on the Ball' - Carragher pays tribute to the man who became the most decorated member of England's 1966 World Cup winning squad.[LNB]'When I think of you, Ian, playing all the way from the old Second Division to a European Cup final, that's some achievement,' says Carragher.[LNB]'I'm still trying to work out how you made 857 appearances! My target is to reach 700 and then I'd be second to you.'
