Jamie Carragher ganmble: Will Liverpool risk injured defender?

Liverpool will decide on Tuesday whether to gamble on Jamie Carragher's fitness or send him for surgery that will rule him out for three months. [LNB]The influential defender dislocated his left shoulder in the closing stages of Sunday's 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. [LNB]He underwent a scan at Liverpool's Melwood training ground on Monday morning before seeing a surgeon at Spire Liverpool Hospital, a centre specialising in sports injuries. [LNB] Decision time: Liverpool must decide whether to send injured Carragher for surgery or risk him[LNB]Carragher was advised surgery would be the most effective way of curing the problem but he is clinging to the hope an operation can be avoided, which would halve recovery time. [LNB]Liverpool play Manchester United, in the FA Cup third round, and Everton on consecutive weekends in January and Carragher is desperate to be involved. [LNB]It would devastate the 32-year-old if he were to miss out and he will discuss his options with manager Roy Hodgson and the club's head of sports science, Dr Peter Brukner. [LNB]Weeks away: Agger is nursing a calf problem[LNB]However, the danger of avoiding surgery is that if he damaged the same shoulder again, an operation - and an even longer absence - would be inevitable. [LNB]Either way, his absence gives Hodgson a massive problem at the heart of his defence as Denmark star Daniel Agger is 'weeks' away from overcoming a calf injury. [LNB]Given that Steven Gerrard is battling to recover from a hamstring tear, Hodgson heads into a difficult run of fixtures - starting away to Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League on Thursday - without his strongest characters. [LNB]'Not having Jamie is a really big blow,' conceded defender Fabio Aurelio. [LNB]'We just hope he can come back soon.' [LNB]It leaves Martin Skrtel and Sotirios Kyrgiakos as Liverpool's only experienced central defenders and Hodgson aims to bolster that area of his team. [LNB]He has watched Lille's Adil Rami, who made his France debut in August and played in the 2-1 win over England earlier this month, and Bolton's Gary Cahill is also being considered. [LNB] Head target: Liverpool have been tracking highly-rated France defender Adil Rami[LNB]Rami, a powerful, imposing 24-year-old, fits the criteria owners New England Sports Ventures are looking for in new signings, but a £12.6million price tag is not so appealing.
