Injury-time: As Owen breaks down again, Sportsmail looks back at the United striker's woes

Michael Owen's timing is truly awful. After battling to shake of the 'has-been' title that had stuck during his time at Newcatle, the striker started in the Champions League for the first time in five years on Wednesday night - and hobbled off after 20 minutes. What compounds the groin injury is that England boss Fabio Capello was present, running the rule over Owen, who had staked a claim for an international recall after his late winner against Manchester City earlier this month. Speaking before the match with German side Wolfsburg, England's second highest golascorer of all time claimed to be 'back to 100 per cent fitness', but he now faces three weeks on the sidelines and will almost certainly miss the next round of World Cup qualifiers. So it's another week, another injury, for the one time European Footballer of the Year and Sportsmail takes a look at Owen's lengthy list of injuries since 1999... 1999 April 12 - Injures hamstring in a league game against Leeds. This proves to be a recurring injury, and prematurely brought his season to an end. December 28 - After eight straight starts, he was withdrawn at home to Wimbledon with another, unrelated, hamstring injury. 2001 September 22 - Limps off at Anfield with a hamstring injury during a 1-0 over Spurs. Scans reveal a slight tear to the hamstring in Owen's left leg - he misses six matches for Liverpool and England's vital World Cup qualifier against Greece at Old Trafford. 2004 Jan 10 - Various niggles keep Owen sidelined and starts his first match for Liverpool since November. August 13 - Joins Spanish giants Real Madrid for £8million. 2005 Aug 31 - Returns to England as Newcastle United fork out £16m to rescue him. Dec 31 - Breaks metatarsal bone in defeat at Tottenham and is ruled out for 'several months'. 2006 March 24 - After making a brief comeback, Owen is unhappy with the progress his foot is making. Shortly after, Newcastle announce Owen requires surgery to tighten the screw inserted into his foot during the initial operation. Apr 29 - Makes return as a substitute against Birmingham but complains of pain afterwards and withdraws from the final game of the season. May 13 - Carried from the field suffering concussion after collision with team-mate Matty Pattison in game with Watford. June 20 - Injures knee in first minute of group game against Sweden in Cologne and is immediately replaced. In what was initially considered a career-threatening injury, he is ruled out for at least nine months and reports suggest he may miss the entire Premier League season to follow. 2007 July 20 - After featuring in just the final three games of the previous campaign, Owen picks up a thigh injury in pre-season which rules him out of the first game of the new season. Sept 17 - Owen is substituted early in the second half against Derby with a groin problem. Sept 23 - Passed fit to line up against West Ham but again the same injury forces him off. Club confirm the striker will undergo further scans to determine extent of the problem. Sept 25 - Magpies boss Sam Allardyce reveals Owen has a 3cm tear in his abductor muscle which will sideline him for three weeks and rule him out of England's two October Euro 2008 qualifiers. He adds Owen may also require a hernia operation Sept 30 - Newcastle confirm Owen has hernia op but makes a swift comeback days later. Nov 16 - Owen suffers a thigh strain during the first half of his side's 1-0 friendly win over Austria. 2008 Pre-season - A calf strain keeps him out of the opening game of the season against Manchester United at Old Trafford. 2009 Jan 28 - Ruled out for six weeks with a cracked ankle bone sustained in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City. July 3 - Joins United as a free agent. Sept 30 - Limps out of Champions League group stage match with Wolfsburg after suffering a groin strain.
