Ian Snodin: Liverpool and Manchester United set right tone ahead of rival clash on Sunday

I THOUGHT that in the end Liverpool and Manchester United acted impeccably as clubs during Sunday’s potentially controversial game at Anfield. There had obviously been a lot of build-up about the bad blood between both clubs in the past but the extra measures they went to in order to ensure a less hate-filled atmosphere seemed to do the trick. Fergie’s letters to the United fans was a good idea and in interviews before the game the United boss couldn’t have done much more to try and diffuse any potentially nasty chants. Brendan Rodgers continued to show his impressive nature and stature by speaking well before the match, and the gesture of having Sir Bobby Charlton give a bouquet of flowers to Ian Rush for the Hillsborough families before kick-off seemed to be well received. I’m not an advocate of pre-game handshakes but both Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra did the right thing when it came to getting on with it, and overall the clubs can say they did everything they could. I heard there was still a bit of nastiness after the game from the away end and on Twitter but the majority treated the game with the right respect given recent developments.
