Hungry Torres targets title
09 Jan 2009 - 08:16:54
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres wants to write his name into the club's folklore by helping them end their wait for the Premier League title this season.
The Spain striker is now fully recovered from his latest hamstring injury and has set his sights on ending the Reds' near 20-year wait for league glory.
Torres scored Spain's winning goal in last summer's Euro 2008 Final which saw them crowned European champions for the first time in more than four decades.
And now the striker is hoping he and his Liverpool team-mates can enjoy the same sort of adulation he has received at international level by winning the league.
"Having won the European Championships with Spain, I have experienced what it is like to be part of a generation of players that will never be forgotten," he told the club's official website.
"I think that the same could be said of this Liverpool team if we can win the league.
"If we can do it we will be remembered for many years in the hearts of Liverpool fans."
Meanwhile, Torres has played down his significance to the team as they are currently three points clear at the top of the table despite the striker starting just seven league games this season,
"A Benitez team is never just about one player but about the group," he added.
"We have a solid unit that knows how to win games playing our way.
"We are working towards the same goal of ensuring that Liverpool win the Premier League.
"If we are able to achieve this it will have been a joint effort - no one player will take the most credit. It is a group effort."
