Hodgson given Mascherano assurance

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson does not expect Internazionale to make an approach for unsettled midfielder Javier Mascherano before the transfer window closes.

The Argentina captain informed Hodgson of his desire to leave Anfield following his return to the club after the World Cup finals.

Mascherano was believed to be keen to rejoin former Reds boss Rafael Benitez at new club Inter.

However, Hodgson has received assurances from Inter - a club he managed on two occasions - that they will not make an approach for any of his players.

Recent reports have also linked Netherlands forward Dirk Kuyt with a move to the Italian and European champions.

"I spoke to (president) Massimo Moratti about the fact they are not going to buy Liverpool players.

"I believe they were only interested in two of our players and they are not going to buy them.

"Moratti said they are not going to do that."
