Hodgson seeking further Reds additions

iverpool manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed he would like funds to further strengthen his Reds squad despite the arrival of six players so far.[LNB] The Merseysiders have been busy in the transfer market this summer with the likes of Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen, Brad Jones, Danny Wilson, Milan Jovanovic and Jonjo Shelvey all joining.[LNB]However, the ex-Fulham boss knows that with just one week left before the transfer window closes, the time left to strengthen is not the best period in which to splash the cash.[LNB]Hodgson does not believe he has fully assessed the talent and potential in the club's squad and academy and is against making a big-name signing if they already have a gem ready to be unearthed.[LNB]"I'd like some money to spend if I could research where that money could be spent wisely," said Hodgson. "Giving me a lot now and telling me to go out and buy some players with one week of the transfer window left would not be particularly advantageous.[LNB]"I've only been here for five weeks or so and I'd want to make sure I had assessed absolutely everyone, including those at the academy, just in case we have an outstanding 17-year-old.[LNB]"We might have a Javier Hernandez there so I don't want to go out and spend £50million on buying another one."[LNB]Meanwhile, Hodgson sees no reason why Monday night's opponents Manchester City cannot win the Premier League title this season.[LNB]The likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal are expected to be the front-runners for the prestigious crown, although City have once again spent big this summer.[LNB]Just last week Roberto Mancini added to his ranks even further with the additions of Mario Balotelli and James Milner - and Hodgson thinks City's star-studded squad can finish top come May.[LNB]"I see no reason why they should not win the league," he continued. "Chelsea did it and they were nothing like title contenders when Roman Abramovich took over the club.[LNB]"Blackburn, too, did it with Jack Walker, who came to a club who were never winning anything. They bought Alan Shearer, Chris Sutton, Tim Sherwood and...suddenly they were champions.[LNB]"I'm sure Manchester City will be devastated not to finish in the top three and qualify for the Champions League because so much money has been spent.[LNB]"The pressure for the manager is to make the players gel. That is always the same at a new club. We have the same situation at Liverpool, except we haven't much money."
