HATCHET MAN: Downing over Silva? In Rafa's world of duds, that is believable

Rafa Benitez's less than consistent record in the transfer market might finally look like a good thing for Liverpool for once. Never mind the duds, now that he is trying to convince Valencia that he has ended his interest in David Silva he needs another element to his negotiating tactic. Hard target: David Silva (second right) has interested Liverpool The Spanish club are looking to drum up an auction for the £15million player and Benitez does not want to be held to ransom. Maybe he could have come up with a better alternative transfer targetthan Stewart Downing, but given the Liverpool manager's record, Valencia might accept it on face value. Never mind the fact that Downing is not a patch on Silva, or that the England winger would not be good enough to get a regular game with Benitez. His price (£12m) is in the same ballpark as that which Liverpool are prepared to pay for Silva so he is as good as any to use as a bargaining tool, and because of previous awful signings such as Jermaine Pennant, Boudewijn Zenden, Harry Kewell and Mark Gonzalez, that makes it believable.
