HATCHET MAN: Deluded Alonso's plain wrong to say Liverpool are better than United

Xabi Alonso would make a great playground debater. You can almost hear him adopting a whiny voice and claiming 'my team beat yours, so that proves we are better than you' and then sticking his tongue out. If only it was that simple. His assertion that Liverpool are superior to Manchester United because they have done the double over them makes a certain amount of sense. They clearly were on the days they met. But does that also mean Liverpool are no better than Stoke because they have drawn with them twice this season? In terms of proof head-to-head results don't really match up to the consistency that leads to a Premier League title. Taking matches in isolation is meaningless when compared to the quality required to finish top of the pile after 38 games. Everybody knows Liverpool can be great on their day, they have proved that in the Champions League. What nobody can say yet is whether they are good enough to win regularly enough to be crowned the best. If they finish the job they have re-started and take the title, Alonso can boast to his heart's content about Liverpool's superiority, but if they end the season below United in the table he will have a lot of egg on his face. PS: Rafael Benitez should get a timely reminder on Wednesday that he needs to be extremely careful in the transfer market this summer. After being linked with former Chelsea crock Arjen Robben, Liverpool liability Andriy Voronin will be back on English soil to show Benitez what happens when it all goes wrong. The Ukrainian who should lead the attack against England in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley must have been one of the worst strikers ever to wear the red of Liverpool. He can score goals for Hertha Berlin, where he is on loan, but that is football at a much lower level and in the Premier League he was a disaster.
