Hamstring tear for Gerrard
05 Feb 2009 - 13:49:55
Liverpool have confirmed that a hamstring tear will keep Steven Gerrard out of action for three weeks.
The Reds skipper limped out of Wednesday's 1-0 FA Cup fourth round replay defeat to Everton at Goodison Park after just 16 minutes and scans have now confirmed the extent of the injury.
Gerrard, who has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season, will now miss England's friendly against Spain in Seville next Wednesday.
"A scan today has confirmed a tear in the hamstring of Steven's left leg," a spokesman told the club's official website.
"He will be out of action for about three weeks."
The midfielder will now miss Premier League games against Portsmouth and Manchester City and also the Champions League last 16 first leg meeting with Real Madrid.
However, Reds boss Rafael Benitez will be hoping to have his talisman back for the second leg of the tie with the Spanish champions, plus a potential Premier League title decider against Manchester United at Old Trafford on March 14.
After Wednesday's defeat at Goodison Park, Benitez claimed the injury had been brought on by fatigue.
"Steven was tired and he gets injured," claimed the Spaniard.
"He was tired, too, at Wigan but when I took him off there everyone was saying he had to play every single minute of every match. Now you have seen the consequences.
"He asked to be taken off, you could see at Wigan he was struggling and the same thing happened here."
