Green light for Mascherano

Liverpool are expected to complete the signing of West Ham United midfielder Javier Mascherano on Wednesday after being given special dispensation by FIFA to swoop for the Argentina international.

FIFA's rules state that a footballer cannot play competitively for more than two different clubs between 1 July and 30 June the following year.

Mascherano has already played for Brazilian side Corinthians and the Hammers in the last 12 months.

However, a statement from FIFA read: "The FIFA single judge ruled that Javier Mascherano is eligible to play in official matches with Liverpool with immediate effect."

Mascherano has made only seven appearances for West Ham since arriving at Upton Park in August and has not started a game since October.
